Amami Oshima, an island in southern Japan, is home to many rare and endemic species found nowhere else.
One of the most famous is the Amami rabbit, a primitive rabbit species that only lives on Amami Oshima and neighboring Tokunoshima.
The island is also home to the Ryukyu long-haired rat, the Amami spiny rat, and unique birds like the Amami jay and the Lidth’s jay.
These animals live in subtropical forests, many of which are protected.
Due to their rarity and ecological importance, Amami ?shima is part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
